Keizerlijk bezoek / Imperial visit

Fulgencio Orozimbo Alvares spoke several languages among them Latin. When the Emperor of Brazil Dom Pedro II came to the north, the representatieve families of Recife were delegated to entertain him. His hobby was speaking Latin and he was very pleased when he found someone with whom he could converse.

From 1822 to 1889 Brazil was an Empire. Dom Pedro II (home Coburg Braganza) was dethroned in 1889 and died two years later in exile in Paris. The abolition of slavery by the Emperor was the cause of his deposition. After the decree to exile in 1920 was repealed, most of the members of the royal Orlean the Braganza family returned to their homeland.

According to family saga the word 'De', as in 'del Rei' ~ of the King, in the name 'De Paula Lopes' was bestowed by the last Emperor of Brazil as a token of appreciation for the hospitality enjoyed he received when he visited northern Brazil.

The above appears to be incorrect because the family is traced back with the notation "de Paula Lopes dos Santos' in Lisbon [see the article 'De Paula Lopes' name], so befor the family De Paula Lopes arrived in Brazil. It is true that there had been contact with the Imperial Family. This has been found among other references with the discovery of the name of the father in law of the mentioned Carlos de Paula Lopes who was a captain in the Brazilian Army; Fulgencio Orozimbo Alvares. It was he who was one of those to received the Emperor during his trip to the North of Brazil.
