De geboorte van de Orde van Sint-Jan dateert van rond 1048. Kooplieden uit de oude Mariene Republiek Amalfi verkregen van de kalief van Egypte de toestemming om een kerk, klooster en ziekenhuis te bouwen in Jeruzalem, om pelgrims van elk religieus geloof te verzorgen of race. De Orde van Sint Jan van Jeruzalem - de kloostergemeenschap die het ziekenhuis leidde - werd onafhankelijk onder leiding van de stichter, de zalige Gérard Thom 1099. Paus Paschal II keurde de oprichting van het ziekenhuis goed met de stier van 15 februari 1113
De Soevereine Militaire Hospitaal Orde van Sint Jan van Jeruzalem, van Rhodos en van Malta (ook wel Maltezer Orde van Orde van Malta) was een door de koning van Jeruzalem gestichte ridderorde met een soevereine status; door de Kerk erkend als kloosterorde. Orde der Tempeliers in 1312 werd de opheffing van de oprichters van de Katholieke Kerk.
De hospitaalridders vormen een katholieke voortzetting van de oude ridderlijke beproeving naast de Tempeliers sinds de kruistochten een bijzondere plaats hebben in de Europese geschiedenis. De Orde van Malta heette aanvankelijk de Orde van Sint-Jan van Johannieterorde, een naam die nog wordt uitgevoerd door de protestants geworden afdeling.
De Orde bleef tot 1530 zonder een eigen territorium, toen Grootmeester Fra 'Philippe de Villiers de l'Isle Adam het eiland Malta in bezit nam, dat door keizer Karel V met goedkeuring van paus Clemens VII aan de Orde was verleend. Er werd besloten dat de Orde neutraal moest blijven in elke oorlog tussen christelijke naties.
Het Maltese Kruis blijft het symbool van de Soevereine Militaire orde van Malta.

The birth of the Order of Saint John dates from around 1048. The Sovereign Military Hospital Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta (also called Maltese Order of Malta) was a knighthood of sovereignty founded by the king of Jerusalem; recognized by the Church as a monastic order. Order of the Knights Templar in 1312 was the dissolution of the founders of the Catholic Church.
The Knights Hospitallers are a Catholic continuation of the ancient knightly ordeal alongside the Knights Templar since the Crusades have a special place in European history. The Order of Malta was initially called the Order of Saint John of Johannite Order, a name still carried out by the department that became Protestant.
The Order remained without its own territory until 1530, when Grand Master Fra 'Philippe de Villiers de l'Isle Adam took possession of the island of Malta, which had been granted to the Order by Emperor Charles V with the approval of Pope Clement VII. It was decided that the Order should remain neutral in any war between Christian nations.

I certify that Francisco de Paula Lopes, Ensign of the Royal Corps of the Privileged of Malta, under my command, enlisted and swore the flag in the year of seventeen ninety eight, and has served as Aid, for the absence of João Estanislau Monteiro, whom as His Majesty’s servant accompanied him to Rio de Janeiro, where he died, always serving with readiness and zeal in the Royal Service. And since this was required to me I ordered it to be made, and it is signed by myself, and sealed with this Royal Corps’ seal. Headquarters of my residence on 9th June 1823.

Breve noticia das ordens monastico-militares em Portugal ~ Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos staat in dit boek genoemd als Capitão Ajudante; de assistent van de kapitein van de Orde van Malta.
In 1807 weigerde Portugal in te gaan op Napoleon Bonapartes eis om toe te treden tot het Continentaal stelsel (embargo tegen Engeland). Een Franse invasie volgde en Lissabon werd ingenomen op 1 december 1807. Twee dagen voor de invasie vertrokken, met behulp van de Britten, 40 schepen met als passagiers de Portugese kroonprins Dom João VI en zijn volledige hofhouding van 15.000 man richting Brazilië.
Na de Franse invasie van 1807, door Napoleon Bonaparte, was Portugal in zeer moeilijke economische en Politieke situatie beland.

De landbouw, handel en industrie waren geruïneerd en veroorzaakte een ernstige economische crisis. De Regering van Portugal werd bestuurd door de Britten die niet veel oog hadden voor de Portugese handel. De Portugese handelaren werden daardoor benadeeld en de bevolking werd mede daardoor overbelast. Als gevolg van deze crisis, voelden vele Portugesen zich aangetrokken door de ideeën van vrijheid en gelijkheid, die de Franse Soldaten vers hadden verspreid tijdens de invasie. Na de nederlaag van de Franse troepen in 1814 wilde het Portugese volk meer zelfbestuur. Portugal kende een lange periode van politieke onrust daardoor. Uiteindelijk leidde deze onrust tot een einde van een lang verblijf van de koning in Brazilië, toen zijn terugkeer naar Portugal werd geëist door de revolutionairen.
De liberale revolutie (Revolução Liberal) was het gevolg en brak uit op 24 augustus 1820.
De revolutie heeft geleid tot de terugkeer in 1821 van het Portugese Hof van Portugal naar Brazilië. Koning João VI zwoer toen trouw dat hij zou terugkeren naar Portugal [independência ou morte!]. Hij deed dat in 1821 na 14 jaar. Portugal ging gebukt onder grote politieke onrust sinds die liberale revolutie. Het liberalisme was geïnstalleerd geweest door een culturele elite. In mei 1823 was er een tegenbeweging. Het heette Vilafrancada omdat het gebeurde in Vila Franca de Xira en het werd gestart door de koningin Carlota Joaquina van Spanje en de Infante Dom Miguel. Koning João VI greep op tijd in en werd de situatie meester.
De koning keerde terug naar Lissabon onder een feestelijke stemming en kwam naar het paleis van Bemposta op 5 juni 1823. Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos, de vader van Joaquim de Paula Lopes, was een van de bewakers die er was om hem te begroeten! Op 09-06-1823 wordt de vader van Joaquim vervolgens voorgedragen voor de post van Capitão Ajudante dos Privilegiados de Malta da Core. Uit een document van 14 december 1826 blijkt dat hij inderdaad deze post toegewezen had gekregen. De post van de kapitein dat hij bij het korps bezette verhief hem tot wat werd genoemd 'nobreza civil’.
De koningin had aartsconservatieve opvattingen en wilde een kordate regering in Portugal. Haar man wilde echter niet afstappen van zijn geloften aan de grondwet. Carlota Joaquina vormde een alliantie met haar jongste zoon, infant Michaël, die zijn moeders conservatieve ideeën deelde. Op 30 april 1824 gebruikte Carlota Joaquina de positie van haar zoon als bevelhebber in het leger, en zij grepen de macht en hielden de koning gevangen in diens Bemposta paleis in Lissabon. Daar probeerde Carlota Joaquina haar man tot een abdicatie te dwingen, en op die manier kon haar zoon Michaël koning worden. Johan VI kreeg echter hulp van burgerij en de Britten, behield zo zijn troon en dwong Michaël om het land te verlaten. Ook de koningin moest in ballingschap gaan, dit was echter maar voor een korte periode.
Dit geheel suggereert dat Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos de kant van de liberale partij had gekozen. Dit kan ook verklaren waarom zijn zoon uiteindelijk is vertrokken naar Brazilië, aangezien vele liberalen het erg moeilijk kregen. Joaquim was 17 jaar toen zijn vader de post van Capitão kreeg en dus oud genoeg om zelfstandig een bestaan elders op te bouwen.

Pede a Vossa Majestade se digne por efeitos da sua Real Grandeza e Beneficência fazer-lhe a graça que suplica.

O suplicante achava-se unido ao Corpo dos Privilegiados de Malta que fazia a Guarda do Palácio da Bemposta no dia 5 de Junho do presente ano.

By dispatch of the Board of the Most Serene House of Infantado dated 13th August of the current year, Your Majesty orders me to inform Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos’ request, in which he asks Your Majesty the post of Captain Aid of the Privileged of Malta of the Court, for having passed away at the Court of Rio de Janeiro the one who occupied this post, and Manuel José Rodrigues Ganhado, who was supra in this post being absent for more than 25 years. The supplicant was united to the Corps of the Privileged of Malta that did the Guard of the Palace of Bemposta on 5th June of the present year.

Participo a Vossa Excelência que ontem seria meio-dia se me apresentou, Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos, Capitão Ajudante do Real Corpo dos Privilegiados de Malta da Corte, e Termo, dizendo-me que no Armazém Real do Exército se esperava que eu mandasse buscar as Armas que havia requisitado, pois já lá havia ordens para se me entregarem, e que para esse fim ali se lhe havida dado o rascunho da Procuração cujo é o que incluso remeto a Vossa Excelência, e persuadido que isto se não oporia à vontade de Vossa Excelência passei a fazer a dita Procuração, e em virtude dela me foram remetidos os objectos requisitados e mencionados, no dito rascunho da Procuração, o que tudo pus em arrecadação, e debaixo de chave, no quarto que antes servia para o Sargento da Guarda do Real Palácio da Bemposta, cuja chave se acha em meu poder, esperando as últimas ordens de Vossa Excelência para fazer uso de tudo o referido quando Vossa Excelência assim mo determinar.
Prontificou-se a Guarda da Real Capela da Bemposta, como Vossa Excelência me ordenou, e composta de 1 Alferes, 1 Sargento, 1 Cabo e 2 Soldados, todos fardados com os antigos uniformes, e fez-se o serviço sem novidade mais do que a de um moço que disse ser do Hospital Real de São José, o qual perturbando a boa harmonia, em razão talvez de ter bebido alguma bebida espirituosa me foi conduzido ao Corpo da Guarda, e fazendo-me certo ser com efeito Moço das Enfermarias do dito Hospital Real de São José, com um ofício, por dois soldados da Guarda do Palácio, o remeti ao Excelentíssimo Senhor Principal Câmara, Enfermeiro-mor do mesmo Hospital Real de São José, e da sua entrega aí, me trouxeram o recibo que incluo remeto a Vossa Excelência. I inform Your Excellency that yesterday at midday Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos, captain aid of the Royal Corps of the Privileged of Malta at the Court, and District, came to me saying that at the Royal Army Warehouse it was expected that I would order the fetching of the guns that I had requested, because there was already an order for them to be delivered to me, and for that end the attached draft of the commission was delivered and now sent to Your Excellency, which I did, and in virtue of it the requested and mentioned objects in the said commission draft were sent to me, and I put them all in the storage, under key, in the room that formerly was used for the Royal Palace of Bemposta Guard’s Sargent, which key is in my power, waiting for Your Excellency’s latest orders so everything can be used when Your Excellency so orders me to.
The Guard of the Royal Chapel of Bemposta was ready, as Your Excellency had ordered me, and it was composed of 1 Ensign, 1 Sargent, 1 Corporal, 2 Soldiers, all uniformed with the old uniforms, and the service was done without any news more than one boy who said he was of the Royal Hospital of Saint Joseph’s, who disturbing the good harmony, for having drunk some spirits, was sent to me to the Guards’ Corps, and being sure that he was indeed a boy of the Nurseries of the Royal Hospital of Saint Joseph’s, with a paper, by two soldiers of the Palace’s Guard, I sent him to the Most Excellent Principal Câmara, chief nurse of the same Royal Hospital of Saint Joseph’s, and of his delivery there, I was brought a receipt that I send attached to Your Excellency. Over de status van Francisco de Paula Lopes dos Santos, het volgende; de post van de kapitein dat hij bij het korps bezette verhief hem tot wat werd genoemd 'nobreza civil’. Dit is te vergelijken met het Nederlandse Patriciaat. Het korps werd voornamelijk samengesteld door mensen die eigendom huurden van de Orde van Malta, die zodanig een paar historische privileges hadden. Een daarvan was dat men deel uitmaakte van dit bijzondere korps in plaats van te dienen aan het front met het leger of bij andere para-militaire eenheden.
